Portside Acquires Baldwin Safety & Compliance to Further Enhance Global Aviation Operating System

Adds essential capabilities to growing platform for the aviation industry

SAN FRANCISCO – Portside, a leading innovator in technology and software solutions for business and government aviation, today announced it has acquired Baldwin Safety & Compliance. This strategic move is aimed at augmenting Portside’s comprehensive suite of tools and technology that empower nearly 1,000 aviation organizations in more than 30 countries.

Baldwin, established in 2004, specializes in designing and implementing robust safety management systems (SMS) for operations of all scales. They also offer vital business capabilities to sustain, extend, and provide steadfast support for these systems.

“Safety is the foremost concern for any aviation provider, and Baldwin is an undisputed leader in this space. They excel not only in terms of delivering safety and compliance programs that adhere to the highest industry standards, but also in tailoring and supporting these programs to meet the ever-evolving needs of their clients,” said Portside CEO, Alek Vernitsky. “This acquisition enhances Portside’s capabilities, aligning with our mission to be a comprehensive, turn-key solution for business and government aviation. It demonstrates our unwavering commitment to growing our platform alongside the businesses we serve.”

Baldwin’s SMS expertise extends to various transportation operations including FBOs, MRO groups, commercial providers, UAS, airports, and air medical transport operations. They also offer services such as Risk Management, Document Management, Gap Analysis, Quality Management System, and various other business-related solutions to further bolster their clientele. Baldwin’s products, coupled with their in-house subject matter experts, are instrumental in keeping operators compliant with industry SMS regulations and readying organizations for impending regulations, such as those proposed in FAA’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) 88 FR 1932, which will mandate SMS for commuter and on-demand operations, commercial air tour operators, and certain holders under Part 21.

Don Baldwin, the Founder of Baldwin, shared his perspective on this acquisition, saying, “We founded Baldwin with the belief that small operators should have access to the same tools and capabilities enjoyed by larger providers when fostering a culture of safety. Today, our products are trusted by operators, both big and small, with the most critical and fundamental aspects of their businesses. Portside shares our commitment to customer service, and we eagerly anticipate becoming a part of their team as we continue to uphold our leading role in safety and compliance.”

The entire Baldwin team will join Portside to ensure ongoing development and support for their products and services. While the specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed, this move aligns with Portside’s recent pattern of enhancements and integrations for its platform. In July, the company acquired licensing and development rights for the Avianis flight management system. Earlier this year, Portside acquired Stellar Lab’s flight operations system hosting business and the BART scheduling product suite.

The transaction was facilitated by Brian Foley of AVStrategies, who has matched investors with great aviation companies since 2006. “This is a perfect example of combining a top-notch transportation specialist with a respected aviation technology platform to provide mutual value and chemistry,” said Brian Foley, Founder.

News Avianis and PnrGo Enhanced Integration
Mar 25, 2024

Avianis and PnrGo’s enhanced integration includes interactive data transfers for new UK UPT and eu-LISA regulations

Avianis and PnrGo together offer a software solution that has made the daily flight scheduling workload much more manageable. Now, the integration has been enriched to prepare flight operations teams for new interactive PAX and CREW programs that international operators will need to comply with.

Avianis is an industry leading web-based business management solution for aviation operations. The integration with PnrGo allows their customers to easily comply with both local and international regulations on reporting passenger and crew data to the relevant security and border guard units. The benefits are noticeable from the start - less work for flight operations departments, elimination of human error, and a safety net against fines and sanctions for non-compliance with data transfer requirements.

What new regulations do air operators need to be prepared for in 2024?

2024 is set to bring two big changes for international operators - the UK UPT and the eu-LISA.

The UK’s Universal Permission to Travel scheme aims to ensure that all travelers have a valid travel permission before flying to or transiting through the UK. The scheme includes the introduction of ETA (the equivalent of American ESTA), verifiable for operators at the stage of iAPI or GAR submission. On 6th April, the UK will close the option to send GAR (General Aviation Report) via email, requiring all the operators who need to submit GAR to switch to interactive data transmissions.

The European Union’s Entry Exit System (part of eu-LISA) is expected to launch in Q3/Q4 2024. EES aims to replace the manual stamping of passports with a digital traveler registration in a central database. Carriers will need to validate passenger data interactively, prior to the departure.

PnrGo follows closely any changes in international regulations on passenger and crew data reporting and vetting. The company has gained expertise in automating compliance for air operators to help them quickly adopt such new requirements, and the upcoming changes have also become a priority for PnrGo’s integration partners.

Avianis and PnrGo’s integration turns interactive to meet the new regulations

The new regulations require an interactive data exchange where air operators submit passenger information and must receive an instantaneous response from the relevant authorities. This required a more advanced integration model between Avianis and PnrGo and both teams worked closely to develop a two-way system communication enabling PnrGo to securely submit the passenger details from Avianis and then push the approval or refusal status back into the flight management software. The new workflow enables Avianis customers to be compliant with UK UPT, eu-LISA, TSA SecureFlight (via DHS router), Canadian API and PPP, and many other regulations around the world. From now on, the “Permission to Board” statuses are visible directly in the Avianis interface.

"We are excited to advance our integration with PnrGo to handle interactive passenger and crew data transfers that ensure compliance with new regulations, such as UK UPT or eu-LISA. Along with the capability to adhere to TSA Secure Flight, Canadian API and PPP, Avianis business and charter operators can now navigate the complex international travel requirements effortlessly," states Alek Strygin, COO of Portside, the parent company of Avianis.

“We are very happy with our cooperation with Avianis,” says Tomasz Lewandowski, Product Owner at PnrGo. “It’s important for air operators to be ready for the upcoming new regulations and improving our integration is the best way for us to tell our customers: we are here for you to help you face any new challenges on the horizon!”

Universal Showcases New Feasibility-IQ® Trip Support App Integration with Portside’s PFM Scheduling System at SDC2024

Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. announced the integration of its leading mission planning and intelligence app, Feasibility-IQ, with Portside’s Professional Flight Management (PFM) flight department operations management system. Demos of the new integration will be available in Universal booth #328 and PFM booth #529 at Schedulers & Dispatchers 2024.

This new integration enables PFM users to synchronize their trip details to Feasibility-IQ at the push of a button within the PFM system, allowing them to instantly review detailed mission requirements and access advanced trip support intelligence from Universal.

Feasibility-IQ equips flight departments with comprehensive, vetted information on customs procedures, ground logistics details, crew and passenger entry requirements, facilities, peak periods, location trends, and more for thousands of airports worldwide. It significantly improves the efficiency of flight departments by saving hours of research time per trip leg and equipping operators with intelligence previously only available through Universal® Trip Support.

This is the second major integration between Universal® and PFM, as PFM users were already able to sync mission details, crew/pax manifest data, and other related information from PFM directly with Universal’s uvGO® Mission Management Platform and Universal Trip Support for mission support.

“PFM users can now not only facilitate trip services by pushing their mission details to Universal from PFM but can now also harness Feasibility-IQ’s real-time planning intelligence for their business aviation missions,” said Guido Groeschel, Executive Vice President, Digital Product Management, Universal. “This is the latest example of how Universal and Portside are collaborating to develop innovative solutions that solve real problems and reduce the operational friction that our mutual clients have.”

“Both PFM and Universal share a commitment to deliver reliable and leading-edge solutions that allow clients to consistently and accurately manage operations,” said Phil Barnes, General Manager of PFM. "The partnership between PFM and Universal will help customers more effectively manage flight and travel logistics end-to-end so they can deliver a high-end, personalized travel experience to their passengers.”

This latest integration builds upon the continued collaboration between Universal and Portside. In the Summer of 2023, Universal and Portside released an integration between Feasibility-IQ and Portside’s BART Scheduling System. In October 2023, the companies announced that they were working together to start development of an advanced, first-of-its-kind mission management application for the business aviation industry.

Jet Aviation Launches Staffing Marketplace Powered by Portside

LAS VEGAS / October 16, 2023 — Jet Aviation announced today that Jet Aviation Staffing Marketplace is now available for operators. The online jobs portal provides a digital platform for matching prospective employees and hiring teams with open roles in the aviation industry.

Jet Aviation collaborated with Portside, a technology solutions provider, to develop Jet Aviation Staffing Marketplace. The web-based and mobile application is designed to streamline the process of matching aviation professionals with posted job openings. The portal launched for candidates earlier this year and is now available for business aviation companies and operators searching for candidates for open contract, hourly and direct hire positions.

“We are delighted to launch this innovative digital recruitment tool for the aviation industry,” says Elaine Lapotosky, Jet Aviation’s vice president staffing. “As technology continues to evolve in our industry and beyond, we saw a need to provide candidates and hiring teams with a streamlined, digital, and automated platform that replaced a largely manual process. This next phase opens the tool up to business aviation operators, who now have access to a digitized talent pool that is automatically refined according to their requirements, allowing them to effortlessly and efficiently match the right person to the right role.”
